But Factions deserves its due, and knowing there could be a second life in it is not just an exciting creative opportunity for the PlayStation stable, but a smart business opportunity, too. I’m glad Naughty Dog is putting all of its emphasis on making The Last of Us Part 2 campaign the best it can be, especially after how impressed I was by my recent Last of Us 2 hands-on time. And though we may not have asked for Factions, it turned out to be a great, enduring experience, that has clearly stuck with both players and developers. Plus, Sony can then specifically tout its got a multiplayer exclusive all to its own console, made with an impressive pedigree and coming off the, most likely, success of Part 2. Releasing it on its own is key to me - allowing the two experiences to, creatively, stand on their own can help ensure players don’t think one’s development took away from the other. It naturally was going to be overshadowed by that lauded narrative, and it didn’t help that its inclusion came after so many other single-player games of that generation, like Tomb Raider, Batman: Arkham Origins, and Dead Space 2, were adding in multiplayer modes no one asked for. The mode, while great, was included alongside one of the most heralded single-player campaigns of not just its generation but perhaps all of modern gaming. Having one of Sony’s most beloved first-party studios make an exclusive multiplayer game - sold as its own experience - for (theoretically) its next-gen console not only brings a new offering into the Sony first-party suite but also offers Factions a chance to be celebrated in its own right. “.We are as big a fan of Factions as the rest of our community and are excited to share more when it’s ready,” the recent Naughty Dog statement said.
